Buenos Aires is a city in love with literature and one of the most important Argentine figures is Jorge Luis Borges, who has a Cultural Centre in the city named after him

Jorge Luis Borges is one of the most famous and remembered Argentine writers of all time. The proof of his importance in Argentine literature is bathed all over the city of Buenos Aires. First stop is The Centro Cultural Borges on San Martín and Viamonte.

Information About Centro Cultural Borges

Centro Cultural Borges, located inside Galerías Pacíficas on San Martín and Viamonte in the Microcentro, is a centre devoted to the promotion of the arts and home to many types of classes, including ballet and theatre.

There is a huge entrance space where photography exhibits are popular and change regulary. The centre also continually presents a number of different live performances in theatre and dance; cutting-edge works and safer classics co-exist in this arty environment, keeping the Borges space modern but highly regarded in the traditionalist circles too.

When taking classes on a regular basis, discounts are available, buying a number of classes in bulk. All classes are of a very high quality. The tuition is excellent and the standard of all the students who attend is very impressive. The facilities, whilst lacking in frills, are also more than adequate; the spring floors in the dance studios an obvious highlight that springs immediately to mind.

A Little History on Jorge Luis Borges' Life and Work

Borges began publishing poems and essays in Surrealist literary journals at the start of his literary career, was fluent in several languages and a target of political persecution during the Peron regime. Blind by his late fifties, Borges eventually died in Switzerland in 1986 and has since been regarded as one of the most important literary figures in the Argentine community.

Born in Buenos Aires, Fictions and Labyrinths are two collections that Borges wrote as he became more established in the world of the word. These two texts have also been published in English by The New York Press and are an easy way of getting to grips with a little of the writer’s accomplishments.

Appreciate a Little of Jorge Luis Borges in the La Poesia Restaurant in San Telmo, Buenos Aires

If a lighter introduction to Borges holds more of an appeal, take a coffee or go for a meal in San Telmo’s ´La Poesia´, one of the nicest places to eat this part of the city. This restaurant houses some photographs of the man himself, amongst other literary greats, and so provides the perfect wat to sneak a peek of what the Argentine poet actually looked like, without having to go to too much trouble beforehand.
